Hoarding: Procedure for Hoarding Levels 4-5
The principal issue with Levels 3 and 4 are hazardous conditions to go with contents and clutter. Hazard conditions include rotting food, insects, rodent, mold, rot, and such. The customer will determine how to handle contents (discard, retain, donate, store, reposition, etc.). The scope will likely include forensic cleaning, including removal of carpets and flooring, and cleaning of walls, ceilings, HVAC ducts, cabinets, etc.
Depending on the scope, temps may be employed. In such cases, the lead technician has the oversight of the temps and provides necessary direction.
Customer will have to provide access. If restroom cannot be used, a port-a-potty will have to be secured.
Full PPE required – coveralls, nitrile gloves, respirator (MaxAir recommended).

Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Preparation
Conduct a Risk Assessment:
Evaluate the living space for safety hazards (e.g., structural damage, pests).
Determine the presence of biohazards (e.g., mold, waste).
Gather Supplies:
Assemble all necessary supplies and equipment before beginning.
Step 2: Establish a Safe Environment
Set Up Containment:
Use containment measures to prevent the spread of allergens and contaminants.
Ensure proper ventilation and consider using air scrubbers.
Step 3: Sorting and Removal
Begin in One Area:
Focus on one section at a time to avoid overwhelming the individual.
Sorting Items:
Sort items into categories:
Keep: Essential items.
Donate: Usable items (if appropriate).
Discard: Trash or hazardous materials.
Hazardous Material Handling:
Place hazardous materials (biohazard waste) in biohazard bags and follow local regulations for disposal.
Step 4: Disposal of Discarded Items
Remove Trash:
Use heavy-duty trash bags for discarded items.
Transport trash bags to industrial bins or disposal areas frequently to minimize clutter.
Dumpsters preferred, if not possible use utility trailer.
Step 5: Deep Cleaning
Thorough Cleaning:
Follow Gross Biohazard procedure.
Step 6: Organizing Kept Items
Organize Remaining Items:
Place kept items in clearly labeled storage containers.
Ensure items are stored in a manner that promotes accessibility and safety.
Step 7: Final Review and Follow-Up
Inspect the Area:
Conduct a thorough review of the cleaned space to ensure safety and organization.
Perform a walk-through with the customer. Address minor items. If a major scope change is required, consult with Admin.
By following this procedure, levels 4 and 5 of hoarding can be effectively addressed, ensuring a safer and healthier living environment.
