Air Handler: Procedure for Cleaning

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Turn Off HVAC System: There is no need to have the unit operating.

  • Vacuum Plate: Remove the air handler cover plate (usually done with thumb screws built into the air handler. Attach the vacuum hose. Direct the nozzle attachment and spray carefully the inside cavity, letting the vacuum pull out the dust and debris.

  • Filter: The ducting before and aft of the filter can be cleaned with rods and brushes. Then vacuum thoroughly. In many cases the filter can be replaced. Discuss with leadership.

  • Return Ducts: The return air systems, typically one per level, should also be cleaned, preferably with brushes if metal, and the whip if flexible ducts. Use larger diameter brushes as duct diameter is larger than supply ducts.

  • Disinfect: Using Sanijet® canister filled with Vital Oxide and blasting rods or black hose with red ball to direct into the duct with valve off. Then open the valve and depress the canister trigger and slowly remove the blasting rod. Coat uniformly the entire duct length and the entrance of the duct thoroughly.

By following this procedure, the air handler, return ducts, and filters effectively treated, improving indoor air quality and system efficiency.
