Biohazard – Illicit Drug Cleanup Procedure
Overview:
Cleaning illicit drugs from a biohazard event involves specific procedures to ensure safety and compliance with legal and health regulations. To do this procedure requires Washington State Meth Certification. This procedure outlines the necessary equipment, chemicals, and steps to effectively Contain, Control, Neutralize, and Remove.
Equipment Necessary:
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
Nitrile Gloves: 6 mil
Heavy Duty Nitrile Gloves: 15 mil (tape wrists)
MaxAir Headset: For respiratory protection against aerosolized particles. Facemask, charged batteries, helmet. For Neutralize and Remove steps.
Respirator: Full-face, for Contain step.
Suits: White coveralls with long sleeve and foot protection.
Boot Covers: Disposable.
Cleaning Supplies:
Power Scrubber: 18V, cordless, telescoping and handheld.
5-Gallon Bucket: For mixing chemistry solutions. Need 2 each.
Foam Sprayer: Multi-Sprayer.
Microfiber Cloths: For wiping surfaces, 19” and 5”.
Swivel-head Microfiber Mop: For cleaning larger floor areas. 19” and 5”.
Fogger: Backpack, 4-gallon capacity.
Chemicals Needed:
Disinfectant: Chem Decon, A, B, C
Disinfectant: Vital Oxide
Step-by-Step Procedure:
1. CONTAIN
6-mil containment as required. Close off doors and windows.
2. CONTROL
Fog using Chem Decon A, B, C. Wet all surfaces. (Use full face respirator.)
Demo as required (fans, cabinets, appliances, carpet/pad, etc.)
3. NEUTRALIZE
Dry mop walls, ceilings.
Foam Chem Decon A, B, C. All surfaces.
Agitate with scrubbers, let dwell 10 minutes minimum.
Wipe down with microfiber.
4. REMOVE:
Wet microfiber with Vital Oxide, wipe down with microfiber.
Post-Cleanup:
1. Waste Disposal:
Dispose of all used microfiber materials.
Dispose of contents only after thorough application of disinfectant via fogger.
2. Hygiene Practices:
Wash hands thoroughly after removing PPE and completing the cleanup.
